Helen Sear is one of Wales’ most acclaimed artists, her work seamlessly moves between expanded notions of photography, sculpture and video. This exhibition is the first UK presentation of the work commissioned for Cymru yn Fenis/Wales in Venice 2015.
The work is rooted in Sear’s local environment of rural Wales. Ideas of mortality and temporality are explored through a series of works in which agricultural landscapes marked for production and consumption are seen to exist simultaneously as magical spaces, imprinting themselves on the body and mind of the viewer. Sear’s photographic and video works explore the image as sculptural form whereby the artist integrates different speeds of looking, contrasting physical scale, colour and vivid material presence.
The exhibition …the rest is smoke was curated by Stuart Cameron on behalf of Ffotogallery and commissioned by the Arts Council of Wales. This exhibition will tour to Crescent Arts, Scarborough, Impressions Gallery, Bradford and Hestercombe House, Somerset in 2018.
